Where does the “The Ol' Spicy Keychain” meme come from?
The sole source is a comic strip published by artist Will Laren on his Blogspot on November 9, 2010. The drawing shows a brother holding an incandescent metal object while the other screams after getting burned. Laren later shared the work on Tumblr and Flickr. The caption "the ol’ spicy keychain" mimics the tone of an old tradition to label this modern, dangerous prank. The gag relies on a classic physical trick: heating metal to create an immediate reaction in anyone who touches it without suspicion. This static image allowed its virality because it provides a clear visual framework for any situation of friendly betrayal.
