What does the “Vous allez voir” meme mean?
The meme is about promising more than you deliver. “Vous allez voir” announces a great future, but nobody knows if it ever arrived. People use it to tease a friend announcing imminent success, a project that does not move, or a supposed talent that has not yet proven itself. The question that goes with it, “where is he now?”, adds the nostalgic touch of finding an old forgotten promise.
Where does the “Vous allez voir” meme come from?
The expression comes from Nouvelle École, the rap competition streamed by Netflix in France. A contestant kept saying “vous allez voir” as if announcing he would surprise the jury and the audience. Viewers held on to the phrase, repeated so often it suggested a future career, then wondered what became of the contestant. The meme has since circulated in captions, comments and edits, often with the amused idea of having lost track of someone.
