What does the “Who is this guy ??” meme mean?
The joke hinges on an apparently familiar face with no evidence that the character exists. The question “Who is this guy ??” is delivered with mock seriousness or nostalgia, as if everyone ought to recognize him. People use the format to tease shared false memories, or to pretend they have one by inventing an appearance in a film, TV show, or video.
Where does the “Who is this guy ??” meme come from?
The meme’s exact origin is unknown. Available information does not identify the character, an original video or show, the first platform where it appeared, or a publication date. Its premise is clear, however: present a nonexistent character as familiar, then play along with claims of remembering him. That setup parodies the Mandela effect, a term for a false memory shared by multiple people. The name refers to a mistaken belief among some people that Nelson Mandela died in prison during the 1980s. Fiona Broome popularized the term in 2010. There is no documented evidence connecting the meme to a specific person or original post.
