Where does the “You're Gonna Have a Bad Time” meme come from?
While cemented into gaming history through Toby Fox’s indie RPG Undertale upon its September 2015 release, the wording dates back to television. It originally appeared in the South Park episode “Asspen,” broadcast on March 13, 2002, spoken repeatedly by a ski instructor. In Undertale, the usually laid-back skeleton Sans issues this threat during the Genocide Route, where the player slaughters every hostile monster. Sans drops the warning at Snowdin and repeats it inside the Judgment Hall, preceding his climactic, grueling boss fight, which quickly turned the phrase into an enduring community staple.
