In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “À la santé du colonel” is a rare card of the Memes FR pack, number 5542 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3498 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “À la santé du colonel” meme mean?
The joke contrasts a ceremonious toast to “the colonel” with the drinking challenge shown in the video. People use the phrase ironically when commenting on a drink, a round of drinks, or someone acting overly confident about heavy drinking. The colonel’s identity is not explained in the known copy, so the line works as an absurd reference rather than a clearly established tribute to a particular person.
Where does the “À la santé du colonel” meme come from?
The meme comes from an amateur drinking video that circulated online, including on Dailymotion from 2008, before appearing on YouTube. A YouTube copy titled “A la santé du Colonel” is dated August 30, 2009. It shows several young men taking on a challenge involving a bottle of undiluted alcohol, alongside peanuts or savoury biscuits. The names Maxime and Julien are spoken in that copy. The line “À la santé du colonel, tout particulièrement !” recurs during the scene, but the participants do not clearly explain who the colonel is. Available information does not establish that the footage came from a television show; it is described as an amateur video posted online. The phrase “La vraie vidéo. Cacahouète !” became associated with the meme’s circulation, though its author and exact date are unknown.
