What does the “A Very Difficult Decision” meme mean?
This format expresses frustration over a binary choice imposed by authority or chance. The dominant emotion is irony: it feigns gravity to highlight the absurdity of a situation where every option leads to loss. It is the perfect response when rejecting unfair constraints or laughing at one’s own powerlessness against equivalent alternatives.
Where does the “A Very Difficult Decision” meme come from?
The meme originates from November 3, 2010, during the conflict between Tencent and Qihoo 360. Tencent published an announcement via its QQ client, displayed as a pop-up window. The text stated: “When you see this letter, we have just made a very difficult decision.” The company threatened to disable QQ on any computer hosting the competitor software 360. Chinese netizens parodied this solemn tone by creating the “QQ style”. This ironic formula criticized the imposition of a choice between two essential services. The first visual image that went viral has no identified author. Initial dissemination went beyond the QQ client itself, but the exact platform remains unknown. The meme transformed a technical constraint into a collective joke about user freedom.
