In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Bonjour chef Echebesch” is a common card of the Memes FR pack, number 747 of the collection, and the 602nd best-known meme of its 869 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Bonjour chef Echebesch” meme mean?
The comedy lies in the deference. The speaker means well, greets the chef respectfully, and it is precisely while polishing the politeness that the name gets destroyed. People use it to greet someone whose surname they are deliberately butchering, to imitate a contestant intimidated by a jury, or to comment on any situation where trying to speak properly produces the opposite. The phrase travels with its misspelling intact: correcting the spelling would delete the joke.
Where does the “Bonjour chef Echebesch” meme come from?
The mangled name belongs to Philippe Etchebest, a French chef born on 2 December 1966, holder of two Michelin stars at the Hostellerie de Plaisance in Saint-Émilion, and the face of *Cauchemar en cuisine* on M6 since 18 April 2011 — the French adaptation of *Kitchen Nightmares*. His Basque surname is pronounced roughly “eh-chuh-best”, which accounts for the approximations. The clip behind the card circulates on TikTok through the account of RTLplay, the RTL group’s catch-up platform; the card dates it to 2021. The programme the excerpt was taken from is not named in the sources available, and the audience traced for it sits entirely on TikTok.
