What does the “Cancer” meme mean?
This expression criticizes outsiders who appropriate a meme without understanding its underlying codes or humor. It expresses the frustration of the original community facing a dilution of meaning. The concept suggests that excessive popularity "kills" the authentic charm and cultural niche of the original format, turning an inside joke into a hollow mainstream product.
Where does the “Cancer” meme come from?
The expression is attested as early as the beginning of 2007 in a discussion thread on the GunzFactor forum. This forum specifically covered the history of the 4chan invasion of Habbo Hotel. The exact phrase used was "The Cancer That is Killing /b/". Documented sources do not allow identifying the precise author or the exact date of first use. The context was a sharp criticism against users from other platforms invading the /b/ board of 4chan. This invasion was perceived as degrading the intrinsic quality of the space. During the summer of 2007, the term gradually spread across various personal blogs and specialized forums. It was then used to denounce what some called the digital "gentrification" of the /b/ section. The usage aimed to protect community integrity against the massive influx of newcomers.
