In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Card Crusher” is a rare card of the Memes World series 75, number 22457 of the collection, and the 38th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.

What does the “Card Crusher” meme mean?

The joke is all in the stare. A man takes something offered politely, crushes it in his fist, and says nothing, which reads as perfectly calm contempt. People use it to show they are trying to rile someone up, or to mock a bad take with zero words. It is also a template: swap the card for a phone, a pill bottle or anything else and the same deadpan cruelty lands in a fresh setting every time.

Where does the “Card Crusher” meme come from?

The footage comes from a late-night TV Tokyo show, Professor Himonya’s Midnight Seminar, aired in the channel’s Ene! block. Himonya is a character, billed as a linguistics professor and expert on human anger, played by actor Shinichi Usui. Usui had earlier starred in two DVDs, from 2006 and 2007, about how to make people angry. In the segment titled “Ruthless,” his co-host offers a business card and he squeezes it flat while staring at her. The clip reached 4chan in December 2007, first on /a/ under the nickname “Rude Dude,” then on /b/ and /jp/. An anonymous poster on Japan’s 2channel turned it into a ready-made exploitable, and the edits followed in large numbers, including crushed pills and other objects.
