Where does the “Chaussures Lidl” meme come from?
Lidl is a German-founded discount supermarket chain operating in many European countries, including France, known for low prices and limited-time promotional items. On several occasions, the chain sold limited-edition sports shoes at a much lower price than comparable branded sneakers, which triggered disproportionate hype: customers lined up as soon as stores opened to get a pair, and some were later resold online for far more than their original price. The phenomenon was widely covered by media and social media, amused by the contrast between Lidl’s discount image and a rush worthy of a high-end sneaker launch.
