What does the “CheetahMen II” meme mean?
This term evokes the aesthetic of digital chaos and the unexpected beauty born from programming errors. It symbolizes a passion for forgotten technological artifacts, where code degradation becomes a source of artistic creativity. Users employ it to celebrate the 'good taste' found in failed productions or to share reinvented musical versions of a cult title among collectors.
Where does the “CheetahMen II” meme come from?
The phenomenon emerged in June 2007 on the Japanese platform Nico Nico Douga. The first identified video, uploaded on June 13, 2007, presented the game as notoriously bad without sparking immediate interest. Four months later, a second broadcast propelled the subject to popularity, relayed by general media outlets. The game itself was developed by Active Enterprises in 1992 as an unofficial sequel to *Cheetahmen*. Only six out of ten levels were completed before the project was buried. Cartridges circulated unofficially since the 1990s. Current virality relies on music generated by system bugs, used massively in MAD videos and various arrangements, exceeding a hundred creations in just a few days.
