In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “CJ” is an epic card of the Memes World series 77, number 22806 of the collection, and the 64th best-known meme of its 139 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “CJ” meme mean?
This phrase perfectly captures resignation towards an endless cycle of negativity. CJ speaks these words upon realizing he has been abandoned by corrupt cops in a rival gang’s territory. The dominant emotion is bitter relief mixed with frustration: you know things are about to go wrong, but there is nothing you can do. It is the typical reaction of someone seeing an enemy, a tedious task, or family drama return after a calm period. The tone is not hysterical but deeply exhausted, making the situation both tragic and funny to the outside observer.
Where does the “CJ” meme come from?
The scene comes from the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, developed by Rockstar Games and released on PlayStation 2 on October 24, 2004. The protagonist, Carl “CJ” Johnson, has just been arrested and then released by corrupt police officers Frank Tenpenny, Eddie Pulaski, and Jimmy Hernandez. They dropped him in Jefferson, a territory controlled by the Ballas, right after the opening cinematic. As he walks toward this dangerous area, CJ delivers his famous quote before calling the place the “worst place in the world.” Although the game launched in 2004, the meme’s virality is more recent. A video of the scene was uploaded to YouTube by ZMOONCHILD on January 7, 2015. Popularity surged in 2019 thanks to a green screen template created by @ChaoticGeekCG, allowing users to overlay CJ’s reaction onto various humorous contexts.
