What does the “Flat Earth” meme mean?
This visual or concept serves as a metaphor for a far-fetched belief defended with unreasonable conviction despite obvious evidence. It expresses disbelief mixed with dark humor, aiming to mock those who prioritize subjective intuition over established scientific methods. The core emotion is frustration with willful ignorance, turning a closed scientific chapter into a tool for social ridicule.
Where does the “Flat Earth” meme come from?
The term does not stem from a single viral video but from persistent urban legends and historical marginal movements. While ancient figures supported this idea, the modern meme anchors itself in recent internet controversies. Satirical videos, such as Kriss Papillon's in February 2020 or content from 2016-2018, popularized irony around the subject. These productions use simplistic demonstrations to underscore the illogical nature of pro-flatness arguments. Virality relies on contrasting absolute scientific consensus with the persistence of unfounded doubts online, transforming a scientific debate into a social mockery tool.
