What does the “Combined GIFs” meme mean?
This meme expresses humor through absurdity and surprise. It plays on the contrast between original cinematic reality and an invented new narrative. Users aim to amaze by showing an impossible interaction, often funny or surreal, as if elements were influencing each other in a parallel world.
Where does the “Combined GIFs” meme come from?
The phenomenon dates back to 2005 on the platform YTMND. A specific creation showed Obi-Wan Kenobi, from Star Wars: Episode I (1999), using the Force to knock over goats. This animation popularized seamless editing without visible cuts. It inspired a local series called "Obi-Wan Hates," where the character knocked over various subjects. The process involves merging disparate clips to fabricate a fictional but visually plausible interaction. Other examples emerged later, including a page dated August 25, 2008, and the subsequent appearance of the subreddit r/CombinedGifs, though the exact date for the latter is not specified in consulted archives.
