What does the “Barrez-vous, cons de mimes !” meme mean?
The gag sets a chase in a hurry against performers who block the way in the name of silent cinema. French speakers use the line to shoo away anything in their path, usually as a joke, and happily swap the word mimes for whatever is annoying them. The rudeness is part of the bit and nobody takes it literally.
Where does the “Barrez-vous, cons de mimes !” meme come from?
The scene comes from La Cité de la peur, une comédie familiale, directed by Alain Berbérian and carried by the comedy troupe Les Nuls, released in France on 9 March 1994. It falls around the forty-fourth minute of the DVD edition. The sources consulted record no earlier appearance and no precise date for the line becoming a meme.
