Where does the “Creepy John Travolta” meme come from?
The meme stems from a red carpet photo taken on February 22, 2015, at the 87th Academy Awards held in the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles. While posing for cameras, Scarlett Johansson was approached from behind by John Travolta, who wrapped his arm around her waist and kissed her cheek. A still shot showing her seemingly staring blankly forward circulated online instantly. On February 23, 2015, online creators began Photoshopping Travolta into absurd contexts and making animated GIFs. His perceived creepiness was further fueled by another moment that night where he stroked Idina Menzel’s chin onstage.
