What does the “Power Level” meme mean?
It expresses the desire to rationalize combat through numbers, turning fiction into statistics. Users employ it to rank forces, create leaderboards, and justify preferences. It serves as a rhetorical tool to argue for a character's superiority, often with humor or intense passion.
Where does the “Power Level” meme come from?
The term appears in the Dragon Ball manga during chapter 195, published on October 17, 1988. In this scene, the character Raditz uses a device called a scouter to evaluate a farmer's power, assigning it a numerical value of five. This narrative invention allows authors to provide a concrete scale for martial abilities. Over time, the community repurposed this internal mechanic to apply to all fictional universes. It becomes a standardized currency for comparing heterogeneous strengths, far exceeding the original scope of Akira Toriyama's series.
