In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Debout (Valérie Pécresse)” is an epic card of the Memes FR pack, number 894 of the collection, and the 179th best-known meme of its 869 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Debout (Valérie Pécresse)” meme mean?
The clip comments on an order nobody follows. It resurfaces when an announcement falls flat, when a group stays put in front of one person’s enthusiasm, or to make fun of yourself after suggesting something everyone ignored. The awkwardness is the subject: the funny part is not the line but the silence that follows it, and having to carry on regardless.
Where does the “Debout (Valérie Pécresse)” meme come from?
The sequence is taken from a campaign rally held at the Zenith in Paris in 2022, during the presidential race, by Valerie Pecresse, then a candidate. She asks the hall to stand; the expected effect does not arrive, and the gap between the instruction and the audience’s response was picked up online immediately. The clip was reposted, recut, set to music and built into edits for weeks. Like many French political memes it outlived the campaign that produced it: it stopped being about a vote and became an image of failing to carry a room, usable anywhere. It works all the better because the clip reads without sound: a raised hand, and a seated hall that does not move.
