Where does the “Disappointed Black Guy” meme come from?
The work was published on December 28, 2011, by Ted Dorfeuille, known online as tediferous on Tumblr. The artist drew inspiration from a real incident: he received an anonymous message he thought was friendly but which contained a racist insult. To make light of the situation with friends, he sent himself that same message, photographed himself reading it, and assembled the shots into a series. The montage depicts the transition from initial hope to final disappointment. The reference to the original insult disappeared as the image went viral, leaving only the emotional structure.
