What does the “Don't Obsess Over Me, I Am Only A Legend” meme mean?
This phrase expresses feigned or real arrogance, often used to ridicule someone’s attitude when they attempt to act like a mythical figure or rebel. Using it highlights the humor in excessive narcissism and failed attempts at being cool, especially when paired with awkward imagery.
Where does the “Don't Obsess Over Me, I Am Only A Legend” meme come from?
The phrase originated on the Chinese forum MOP (Mao Pu Da Za Hui). The initial post was published on March 25, 2009, by a user with the handle “Don’t Obsess Over Me.” He shared so-called “non-mainstream” photos accompanied by an arrogant text referring to himself as “big brother.” The audacity of the tone triggered an immediate backlash: the community massively remixed the phrase with embarrassing or grotesque images. This visual practice transformed a simple narcissistic declaration into a tool for collective satire, cementing its status as a viral meme by April 2009 before spreading internationally.
