What does the “Smol” meme mean?
This meme embodies the desire to protect and cherish what is small and vulnerable. It turns smallness into a major aesthetic quality, associated with innocence and softness. The user feels strong positive emotion, often compared to that provoked by seeing a newborn or a chick. It is a visual celebration of fragility deemed charming.
Where does the “Smol” meme come from?
The precise origin of the term remains unknown to web historians. Traces indicate an emergence on social media between late spring and early summer 2015, without an identified author. An earlier occurrence on Twitter in 2008 as "smol children" exists, but it does not constitute the direct source of the current phenomenon. The word gained prominence in the mid-2010s via DoggoLingo, a playful language dedicated to adorable animals. Its massive spread relies on mass shares of juvenile animal photos on major social platforms.
