What does the “Dufnering” meme mean?
This meme expresses mental or physical exhaustion, temporary 'burnout,' or voluntary disconnection after intense effort. Where does the “Dufnering” meme come from?
The origin dates back to March 28, 2013, when video journalist Christine Lee photographed professional golfer Jason Dufner during a charity visit to the Salesmanship Youth and Family Center in Irving, Texas. Dufner, visiting children, was captured sitting on the floor, back against the wall, legs extended, and eyes blank, seeming to have momentarily lost all energy during the activity. The photo was sent to David Watkins, who posted it on Twitter that same day. Sports website Deadspin then picked it up, accelerating its spread. The term 'Dufnering' was coined by fellow golfer Keegan Bradley on Twitter, quickly mimicked by peers like Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, and Luke Donald. The phrase entered popular vocabulary to describe this specific posture of absolute fatigue.
