Where does the “Gojira aux JO” meme come from?
French metal band Gojira performed during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics, held in Paris on 26 July 2024 and broadcast live on France 2. Staged on the Seine rather than in a stadium, the ceremony mixed very different artistic segments, and Gojira's performance stood out sharply from the rest of the night through its energy and aesthetic. The broadcast drew a record audience for French public television, with around 23 million viewers and over 83 percent market share, also boosted by other standout moments of the evening such as Aya Nakamura's performance. The gap between that huge audience figure and the presence of a metal band in such a mainstream broadcast made this segment a widely shared talking point online.
