The phrase describes a tense professional relationship between a major player and his coach, used beyond football to describe any prolonged disagreement between two people who would normally be expected to work together. It also serves as a reminder that even a widely recognized talent is not immune to being sidelined by team management for reasons unrelated to sport. It is used in comparison whenever a lasting rift settles between two public figures despite their respective qualities.
Where does the “l’embrouille benzema deshamps” meme come from?
Karim Benzema, a French international born on 19 December 1987 in Lyon, was placed under formal investigation in a blackmail case involving a sex tape that targeted his France teammate Mathieu Valbuena. Following that case, national team coach Didier Deschamps chose to stop selecting Benzema for the France squad, a decision he publicly stood by. This exclusion, maintained for several years despite the player's high sporting level, became a symbol in French football of a broken relationship between a coach and one of his best players, which is why the phrase “l'embrouille Benzema Deschamps” is reused by the card to describe this dispute.
