What does the “J’avais 0 dans les poches” meme mean?
The line sets the scene for a story by stressing total broke-ness at that moment, to better highlight what happened next, good or bad. People say it to tell an anecdote where having zero money shaped the evening or the day, without really complaining: it is the comic or nostalgic starting point of the story.
Where does the “J’avais 0 dans les poches” meme come from?
The phrase leans on a round, extreme number, zero, to mark total broke-ness at a precise moment, a common device in hard-times stories told with some distance. The contrast between that complete lack of money and what happens next, often turning out well or badly in an unexpected way, gives the line its comic or touching effect. It works as a story hook, meant to grab attention before telling what happened despite having zero in one's pockets.
