In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Je connais Zazie” is a rare card of the Memes FR pack, number 1872 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3511 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Je connais Zazie” meme mean?
The line is a legendary slip: Johnny takes singer Zazie for Zinedine Zidane, nicknamed Zizou, and praises her as a player. The charm lies in the total confidence of a live answer that is completely off. People quote it for a mixed-up name, an answer wide of the mark, or boldness about a subject one knows nothing about. It also recalls Johnny’s ease, unfazed in front of the anchor and likable despite the blunder.
Where does the “Je connais Zazie” meme come from?
In 2002, on TF1’s 8 p.m. news, Claire Chazal asked Johnny Hallyday what he thought of the French national football team. The singer replied, “Well, listen, I know Zazie, I love her as a player… like many!”, evidently thinking of Zizou, the nickname of Zinedine Zidane. The extract has stayed in memory and circulates on YouTube under titles like “Johnny confuses Zazie and Zizou on the news,” watched hundreds of thousands of times. It turns up in compilations of TV blunders and Johnny tributes, and works as the textbook example of an on-air slip.
