What does the “Je sais pas si c'est un cheval ou une truie” meme mean?
The phrase is a crude jab, delivered with the assurance of someone who doubts nothing. It evokes a character who speaks with no filter, stacking tactless remarks and nosy questions without waiting for answers. In the meme, it accompanies a burst of personal questions. People use it to tease a friend about their look, to comment on an unflattering photo, or to imitate the tone of a loudmouth who thinks he is funny. The humor comes from the proud tactlessness.
Where does the “Je sais pas si c'est un cheval ou une truie” meme come from?
The line comes from Dikkenek, a Belgian-French comedy directed by Olivier Van Hoofstadt and released in 2006, produced by EuropaCorp. The film follows J.C., a talkative petty thief in Brussels who tries to help his friend Stef find love, and crosses paths with Claudy Focan, an abattoir director and amateur photographer played by François Damiens. The title means a braggart in Brussels slang. The film disappointed in theaters, with about 122,000 admissions in France, before turning cult on DVD. Clips have circulated for years on YouTube, where one is captioned “t’as vu ta tronche, j’sais pas si c’est un cheval ou une truie”. The meme cuts out this line and pairs it with intimate questions fired in a row.
