What does the “Je suis ministre je n’sais rien faire !” meme mean?
The phrase is the panicked confession of a powerful man who realizes he masters nothing. In Louis de Funès’s mouth, the panic and bad faith give the line its edge. People quote it to comment on political news, a surprising appointment, an overwhelmed official or a promotion nothing justified. It also works as self-mockery, when you land in a job without knowing the ropes. Its appeal is universal: it fits any era and any government.
Where does the “Je suis ministre je n’sais rien faire !” meme come from?
The line comes from La Folie des grandeurs (Delusions of Grandeur), a comedy directed by Gérard Oury and released in France on 8 December 1971, very loosely adapted from Victor Hugo’s Ruy Blas. In seventeenth-century Spain, Don Salluste, a greedy and hypocritical minister played by Louis de Funès, falls from the queen’s favor. To take revenge, he passes off his valet Blaze, played by Yves Montand, as his nephew. The character then laments: “Qu’est-ce que je vais devenir, je suis ministre, je ne sais rien faire!” The scene has long circulated as clips on YouTube, and it resurfaces in comment sections whenever the news mixes politics and incompetence. It remains one of the actor’s lines people like to quote.
