What does the “Jesus is coming soon” meme mean?
The phrase works as a theatrical announcement: the event is presented as near and unavoidable. Repurposed online, it marks urgency or the wait for a big moment, whether a long-awaited release, an endless delay or something everybody is hoping for. The grave tone of the formula, clashing with the ordinary subject it is stuck on, produces the humour. The formula suits a message among friends just as well as a photo caption.
Where does the “Jesus is coming soon” meme come from?
The idea of Jesus returning belongs to Christian doctrine: Christianity awaits the return of Christ, called the parousia, at the end of time. The announcement “Jesus is coming soon” is a warning formula delivered in a prophetic tone. The meme lifts its solemn tone and recycles it on social media, where the phrase can apply to any kind of waiting. It only borrows the form of the announcement and does not discuss its substance.
