What does the “Jeu du rond” meme mean?

The circle game works as a social trap: whoever forms the circle waits for a distracted target to glance down at it, often out of reflex or curiosity, so they can then punch that person lightly on the arm without consequence. The phrase is used more broadly for this kind of childish trap, or for any joke that lures someone into a visual trick without them noticing. It carries a playground atmosphere, somewhere between complicity and the victim's annoyance.

Where does the “Jeu du rond” meme come from?

The circle game traces back to a schoolyard prank invented in the early 1980s by Matt Nelson, a resident of Ohio. The rule has stayed the same since then: form a circle with the thumb and index finger, hold it below the waist, and if someone looks at it, they get punched on the arm. The prank gained massive visibility through the American sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, which devoted an entire episode to it, broadcast in November 2000, with the characters constantly tricking each other. Since then, the game has been passed down between generations of teenagers, both in real life and in videos that reenact it.
