What does the “LE JARL” meme mean?
The phrase is used, in a playful tone, to describe a bossy or fickle secondary character who keeps reappearing in a story or a playthrough. It is used to comment on an absurd or frustrating interaction with a fictional authority figure, echoing the comic exaggeration typical of gaming videos that mock this kind of role.
Where does the “LE JARL” meme come from?
In Skyrim, a role-playing video game released in 2011, “jarl” is the title given to the ruler of each major city in the game’s fictional region of Skyrim, a non-player character central to several main-story and local quests. French-speaking video creators multiplied exaggerated commentary and reactions about these characters during streamed playthroughs, with mocking titles labelling certain jarls as frauds or as the game’s worst encounters. This deliberately over-the-top tone, repeated from one video to another, turned a simple in-game ruler title into a recurring expression shared among French-speaking Skyrim players.
