What does the “Luke, I am Your Father” meme mean?
This meme highlights how collective false memories can overshadow reality. It expresses irony regarding a widely held but factually incorrect belief. People use it to point out distorted recollections or persistent cultural confusion, often with humor.
Where does the “Luke, I am Your Father” meme come from?
The meme stems from a iconic scene in *Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back*, released on May 21, 1980. In this moment, Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones) reveals his paternity to Luke Skywalker. However, the actual line is “No, I am your father,” not “Luke, I am your father.” This error became so entrenched that it replaced the official dialogue. One source notes the wrong phrasing was popularized as early as 1981 on the HBO special *6th Annual Young Comedians*. A 1983 radio adaptation also used a similar variant. No precise origin for its spread as an internet meme is identified, but it clearly falls under the Mandela Effect.
