What does the “Warum liegt hier Stroh rum?” meme mean?
People drop this line when they stumble on something out of place that nobody bothers to explain. It's the question you ask out loud in front of a mess that shouldn't be there, without really expecting an answer. The tone stays light, almost resigned: you're just stating the obvious, not losing your temper. It works just as well for an actual pile of junk blocking a hallway as for a confusing social situation where one detail just doesn't fit.
Where does the “Warum liegt hier Stroh rum?” meme come from?
The line comes from a filmed moment where someone, in an almost monotone voice, reacts to a material that has no business being where it is. Clipped and recirculated online, the quote spread as a ready-made reaction, detached from its original context, used to comment on any scene that makes no sense. Its charm sits in the flatness of the delivery against the absurdity of the observation: the calmer the question sounds, the funnier the effect.
