Where does the “Ich bin ein echter Gangster” meme come from?
The line comes from amateur early-YouTube videos in Germany, resurfaced in nostalgic retrospective compilations about the first steps of German-speaking YouTubers such as BibisBeautyPalace, JuliensBlog, and Liont, who replayed these archival clips to laugh about them with their audience. In one such clip, a young man filmed on an amateur camera introduces himself by saying “Ich bin ein echter Gangster” in an exaggerated tone that clashes with his completely ordinary look. The clip was reused across several nostalgic “YouTube Classic” compilation videos, which turned the line into a shared reference for a whole generation of German internet users who grew up with that era of content.
