What does the “I bims – vong Sprache her” meme mean?
“I bims” stands in for “Ich bin” (“I am”), while “vong” twists the preposition “von”, paired with “her” to form a grammatically absurd phrase like “vong Sprache her”, roughly “language-wise”. Nicknamed “Vong-Sprache”, the style is used to write intentionally mangled sentences packed with anglicisms, for comic effect: parodying German impoverished by social media, or poking fun at certain youth speech habits.
Where does the “I bims – vong Sprache her” meme come from?
“Vong-Sprache” is a German internet writing style that emerged in the mid-2010s, built on deliberate grammar mistakes and a mix of anglicisms. Its name comes from the caricatured use of “von” turned into “vong”, used in phrases like “vong X her” to mean “from X's point of view” in an exaggeratedly clumsy way. The style spread across German social media as a form of linguistic humor, picked up in memes, image captions, and messages, before being documented as a language phenomenon in its own right.
