In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Der Schulzzug” is a rare card of the German Memes pack, number 115 of the collection, and the 39th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Der Schulzzug” meme mean?
The phrase describes a collective euphoria that builds very fast around a person or project, driven more by novelty than actual results, and that burns out just as abruptly as it appeared. It is used for any media-driven hype seen as artificial, bound to collapse once reality catches up.
Where does the “Der Schulzzug” meme come from?
In January 2017, former European Parliament president Martin Schulz was named the SPD's candidate for German chancellor. His nomination triggered an unexpected surge in popularity, nicknamed the “Schulz effect” and then the “Schulzzug”, with polls jumping for his party and a record wave of new party members. That momentum collapsed over the following months as the polls slid back down. In the September 2017 federal election, the SPD scored its worst postwar result, abruptly ending the episode. The term “Schulzzug” has since stuck to describe that meteoric rise followed by an equally fast fall.
