Where does the “Der Krater!” meme come from?
A crater is, literally, a depression carved into the ground by an impact or an explosion, a term used in geology to describe this kind of formation. In 2024, the cry “Der Krater!” emerged in German-speaking streaming, reusing this word for comic effect in response to a disproportionately large hole or damage created in-game, often after an explosion. The exaggeratedly alarmed tone, modeled on how one would react to an actual geological crater, appealed to viewers and was clipped to describe this kind of moment.
