What does the “Maschendrahtzaun” meme mean?
The word has become shorthand for a tiny neighbour quarrel that balloons into something absurd. It comes out when a fight over a hedge, a bush or a fence makes too much noise, or to imitate the stretched-out Vogtland accent. It also carries nostalgia for late-1990s TV and for Stefan Raab's knack for building hits out of television clips.
Where does the “Maschendrahtzaun” meme come from?
In October 1999, Regina Zindler, a resident of Auerbach in the Vogtland region of Saxony, appeared on the Sat.1 courtroom show Richterin Barbara Salesch. She complained that her neighbour's shrub, the Knallerbsenstrauch, was damaging her fence. The judge dismissed the case. The same month Stefan Raab picked up the clip on his show TV total and had fun with the plaintiff's accent. With the band Truck Stop he turned it into a country song, “Maschen-Draht-Zaun”, released on 12 November 1999. It stayed at number one in Germany for six weeks and sold around a million copies.
