In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “The Länd” is a common card of the German Memes pack, number 297 of the collection, and the 150th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “The Länd” meme mean?
The meme plays on a state acting like an international brand while keeping its accent. People use it to poke fun at over-polished marketing, to mock clumsy Anglicisms, or, the other way round, to claim their place in south-west Germany with a wink. That umlaut on the A is the detail that gets the smile: it makes the English obviously off and deliberately lovable.
Where does the “The Länd” meme come from?
On 29 October 2021 the government of Baden-Württemberg announced in a press release that the state would now go by “The Länd”. The campaign was created by the agencies Jung von Matt and Milla & Partner and came with a dedicated site, thelaend.de. It replaced the famous “Wir können alles. Außer Hochdeutsch.” (“We can do everything, except speak standard German”), launched in 1999 by Scholz & Friends. The pun immediately filled social media and German newspapers, charming some and irritating others, and turned into a meme.
