What does the “Despechá at the beach” meme mean?
This moment comes up when talking about a dance or gesture so simple that everyone immediately imitates it, often in a beach or summer setting. It's also used as shorthand for a song tied to carefree Spanish summer energy.
Where does the “Despechá at the beach” meme come from?
“Despechá” is a track by Catalan singer Rosalía, blending Dominican mambo and merengue with electronic pop in a tight two-and-a-half-minute format. The song was first performed live during the Motomami World Tour, including at the opening show in Almería, before being officially announced and then released digitally on 28 July 2022. Between those two moments, tour footage of Rosalía dancing with fans brought up on stage went viral on TikTok, popularising the dance's simple moves before the official video even came out, filmed on a beach and released in early August 2022. Pitchfork and Rolling Stone both covered the track, with the latter comparing its danceable energy to Beyoncé's “Break My Soul”.
