In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Gemma del Sud” is an epic card of the Italian Memes pack, number 117 of the collection, and the 26th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Gemma del Sud” meme mean?
People bring her up to talk about the early days of Italian YouTube, old-web nostalgia, or, more seriously, what online mockery can do to someone who was simply sharing videos.
Where does the “Gemma del Sud” meme come from?
Gemma del Sud is one of the first widely recognised faces of YouTube in Italy. Her videos show karaoke and small dance routines recorded in her bedroom, with the modest means of a very young web. Part of her fame came from users laughing at the clips, which spread across forums and social sites. The mockery turned into cyberbullying, and she eventually stepped away. That is why the meme is double-edged: it recalls an era, but also a story that argues for kindness over ridicule.
