What does the “Upyachka” meme mean?
People point to it to say loud nonsense beats dull seriousness. The deliberately misspelled text, repeated in a loop and shouting victory over boredom, sums up the spirit: coded slang, irony, party mood. Followers cast themselves as warriors against gloom, hence the pompous, deliberately ridiculous tone.
Where does the “Upyachka” meme come from?
The picture appeared in January 2007 on Leprosorium, a section of the site dirty.ru. Its first author was the user xbost and its keenest spreader was Andrey Zagoruyko, nicknamed unabOmber. At first it served as a weapon in a feud between that community and the site Habrahabr. In April 2007 the website upyachka.ru opened and gave birth to a subculture with its own mythology, vocabulary and declared mission against boredom, called “UG”. The meme became one of the symbols of the early Runet.
