What does the “Voenkom Zakharov” meme mean?
The meme plays on the mild, widespread worry about being summoned to the military office. Instead of a menacing figure, you get a beaming officer, which makes the whole thing absurd. People post it to defuse an administrative errand, to tease a friend who avoids official mail, or to add irony to a story about service in the army.
Where does the “Voenkom Zakharov” meme come from?
Zakharov is a fictional nickname tied to the figure of the “voenkom”, the head of a military commissariat in Russia. Compilation videos titled “Voienkom Zakharov” and “The story of military commissar Zakharov” gather funny pictures and captions about him, and the name spread through Russian-language YouTube communities. The officer’s smile became the recognisable part, the detail that turns a bureaucratic scene into a comic moment.
