In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Let me speak from my heart” is a rare card of the Russian Memes pack, number 78 of the collection, and the 40th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Let me speak from my heart” meme mean?
People reach for this meme whenever someone dives headfirst into a foreign language with total confidence despite a thick accent and shaky grammar. It is less mean-spirited mockery than a fond, slightly teasing nod to the courage of trying regardless of the outcome. It also gets self-applied, half-jokingly, right before someone has to give a speech or presentation in English.
Where does the “Let me speak from my heart” meme come from?
The line comes from a speech Vitaly Mutko, then Russia’s Minister of Sport, gave in December 2010 in Zürich to FIFA’s executive committee, as part of Russia’s bid to host the World Cup. His thick Russian accent turned the opening line into “Лет ми спик фром май харт” (“Let me speak from my heart”), instantly mocked across the Runet. Mutko later said he had memorized the speech over two weeks, rehearsing in front of his family beforehand. The joke resurfaced repeatedly afterward, notably when Dmitry Medvedev gave him an equally clumsy English birthday wish in 2015, and when Vladimir Putin gifted him an English self-help book, keeping the meme alive for years.
