What does the “Paket Yarovoy” meme mean?
The meme pokes fun at the fear, real or exaggerated, that an innocent repost could draw the authorities’ attention after the Yarovaya package passed. It shows a user hesitating to share an image or joke out of fear of legal trouble, or joking about being “wanted” for a single click. The tone stays satirical, aimed at mocking a law seen as intrusive rather than discussing it seriously.
Where does the “Paket Yarovoy” meme come from?
The Yarovaya package is a set of anti-terrorism laws passed in Russia in 2016, pushed in part by lawmaker Irina Yarovaya, which tightened telecom operators’ obligations and broadened certain online-content offenses. Its passage triggered a wave of RuNet jokes imagining absurd consequences for a simple repost or content share, in a dark-humor register about surveillance. The name “Yarovaya package” stayed attached to these jokes rather than to the law’s legal detail, becoming comic shorthand for any rule seen as excessive.
