What does the “Montjoie Saint-Denis, Macronie” meme mean?
Outside its context, the phrase is used to launch a pompous, offbeat battle cry, as if charging into combat for a tiny cause. “Montjoie ! Saint-Denis !” evokes medieval history, and the add-on “à bas la Macronie” drags it back to current affairs. Internet users use it to exaggerate anger, declare a mock crusade or end a joke in a grandiloquent tone. The original episode belongs to political news: the meme keeps the phrase and leaves out the act.
Where does the “Montjoie Saint-Denis, Macronie” meme come from?
“Montjoie ! Saint Denis !” was the war cry of the armies of the French kings, especially the Capetians, linking the “montjoie” banner to Saint Denis, patron of the kings of France; it is said to have stayed in use until the sixteenth century. In June 2021, during a visit by President Emmanuel Macron to Tain-l’Hermitage in the Drôme, a man shouted “Montjoie ! Saint Denis !” and then “À bas la Macronie !” before slapping him. The press identified him as Damien Tarel and noted that the slogan had a royalist flavour. Footage spread fast, and the phrase became a humorous remix on social media.
