What does the “SKINNY DE QUOI” meme mean?
The meme conveys the theatrical astonishment of someone discovering something unexpected and commenting out loud, unfiltered. “Skinny de quoi?” (roughly “skinny, as in what?”) challenges a word the other person used: you pretend not to understand to highlight the absurdity. In practice, people replay the audio or quote the line when a friend gets carried away over a detail, or to comment on an oversized reaction. The humour comes from the energy of the voice note and its strongly marked speaking style.
Where does the “SKINNY DE QUOI” meme come from?
The origin is a voice message from a young man, recorded after he received a photo on Snapchat. The voice note, recorded in the moment, was kept as is, with its exclamations and slang, and that spontaneity is what made it travel. The clip was cut out, reused as a sound for short videos, then quoted in comments as the single question “skinny de quoi”. As with many famous voice notes, the identity of the speaker matters little: people remember the voice, the rhythm and the phrase. The exact context of the photo stays secondary, since the meme mostly serves to react to a surprise.
