La Guerre des boutons, directed by Yves Robert from Louis Pergaud’s 1912 novel, opened in France on 18 April 1962. It was a major hit, with roughly 10 million admissions in France, and won the Prix Jean-Vigo and the Victoire for best French film. The line “Ah ben mon vieux, si j’aurais su, j’aurais pô v’nu!” is spoken by Petit Gibus, played by Martin Lartigue, who was about nine at the time. It is not in the novel: it adapts a saying that already appeared in 1939 in the satirical journal L’Os à moelle. Comedian Jacques Bodoin had used the same phrase since 1953 for his character Philibert and, in August 1962, announced a lawsuit against the producers.
