What does the “NEDM” meme mean?
The phrase denotes absolute moral condemnation. During early internet culture, players frequently claimed that playing high-energy music from the video game *Doom* could make any clip cool or funny. Stating that an act is “Not Even Doom Music” emphasizes that some behaviors cross a line so severe that no soundtrack or comedic framing can ever make them tolerable. It quickly evolved into an emphatic dismissal of grotesque or despicable behavior.
Where does the “NEDM” meme come from?
In July 2005, a shocking video depicting severe animal cruelty appeared on Ogrish.org. Community administrators investigated, contacting PETA and law enforcement, which resulted in the arrest of a Belgian teenager and the eventual surrender of the perpetrator. Following the removal of the clip, a YTMND user named Baron uploaded a page setting frames of the incident to music from *Doom*. Outraged by positive ratings on the entry, user moheevi responded that not even the soundtrack from Doom could justify such an atrocity. The initialism NEDM exploded into a popular YTMND series, routinely pairing the phrase with Happy Cat and the track *We Interrupt This Program*.
