“Neymar chokbar” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “Neymar chokbar” meme mean?

“Chokbar” is a playful, street-style twist on the French word for shocked. Paired with Neymar’s face, it stands for pure disbelief: you watch something unfold and your brain cannot keep up. Fans post it when a result flips in the final minutes, when a surprise announcement drops out of nowhere, or when a friend does something nobody saw coming. It works for football and for everyday life alike, and it carries a bit of self-mockery, since the poster pictures themselves frozen in place, wide-eyed and speechless.

Where does the “Neymar chokbar” meme come from?

The image comes from the 2018-19 Champions League round of 16 between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United. PSG won the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford, which made a smooth qualification look likely. In the return leg at the Parc des Princes, United won 3-1 and knocked the French side out, a comeback, or “remontada”, that left French fans speechless. Neymar is shown visibly shocked by what was happening. French social media isolated that shot, labelled it “chokbar”, and started reusing it for every plot twist, first in football circles and then in ordinary conversations.
